13 Patios

These are short stories about connection. They're simple, from the heart and full of real life stuff. I’m Annie. My best friend is Pogo, a blind Pit Bull and the happiest dog I’ve ever met. This summer, we're grabbing drinks on 13 different patios with 13 strangers and we're sharing our stories here.

Moved

Last fall I moved to Chicago for my dream job. The first three months were nothing like I hoped. I missed my friends terribly. I was overwhelmed by city life. Then came a skin cancer diagnosis and a breakup. Even for an optimistic Enneagram 7, it was a lot.

Shaken

I’ll admit I felt sorry for myself, but in true Annie fashion, I made a list of what brings me joy. Pogo. Friendship. Patios. Sunshine. Craft cocktails. Years ago I had the idea to visit 13 patios with friends, but never got around to it. This time, it packs way more meaning and a new focus. ​​

Stirred

We all come to a point where we wonder "now what" or "who am I", often times it's after a break up or other significant loss. Break-ups are endings, but they are always new beginnings. This project is personal to me, but I want to share it with you because I hope you get a laugh, know you're not alone and maybe even feel inspired to go out and make the most of your new beginning.

People

One study found that lack of social connection is worse for our health than smoking, obesity, or high blood pressure. We need each other. Everyone has a story and we all crave connection.  I challenge you to visit one patio. Or three. Or thirteen. Bring someone new or someone you want to know better. Put your phone away. Sit outside. Talk. Laugh. Listen.
